OHHHHH...WHAT A BONANZA!

Cal defeated NC State 73-72 in overtime in what is already being hailed as the most exciting game of the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Wolfpack led by 2 with 12 seconds left in OT after a trey by Scooter Sherril. All seemed lost but Cal's English Freshman Richard Midgely put up a game-winning trey with just over 3 seconds left to give Cal the improbable victory. Cal fans cried, shrieked, screamed, and danced around the nation as the Bears advanced to the second round for the second year in a row.

"I've got my ESPN game tracker up on one screen, and my CNN war tracker up on another"
said Vic Rethy, as he watched the game from work.

Other Cal fans took the day off and watched the game on ESPN, or drove from one sports bar to another unaware that the game was ON ESPN.

The Bears next play #1 seed University of Oklahoma on Saturday, in a game most fans feel we have little chance of winning.

One basketball prognosticator would disagree:

"In the second round, Oklahoma meets California, which has physical toughness on the inside with Gabriel Hughes, Joe Shipp and Co. Coach Kelvin Sampson's team must get a big-time performance on the baseline from players like Kevin Bookout, Jabahri Brown and Co. to negate some of the Golden Bears' strength. This should be a great matchup. Cal coach Ben Braun knows how to win in the tournament -- including a Sweet 16 trip when he was at Eastern Michigan. And Sampson has certainly become one of the Rolls Royce coaches in American and would like to go to the Final Four in consecutive years."
